State of the EU
State of the EU (also State of the Union, State of the Union Address, and State of the Union) is a speech given by a head of state of a European Union (EU) member state or the President of the European Council to a joint session of the European Parliament, outlining the state of the union of that EU member state. They are traditionally given at the start of a parliamentary session in the European Parliament and are usually held on the first day of the session.
The term "State of the Union" has its origins in the first State of the Union Address (1990) in the Netherlands and was adapted by all the other countries later to their own national situation. The speech has become a standard speech of the EU, usually delivered by the head of state of the EU member state to the European Parliament, usually in the first week of each parliamentary session.
The State of the Union is an important part of the overall European Union strategy and is frequently used by the heads of state or governments of the EU member states to present the European Union policies, address the EU legislature and present their countries' positions on a number of issues. The address is meant to be a reflection of the EU's overall situation. The wording of the address varies depending on the year and language in use by the countries in the EU.
The last state of the union address in the European Parliament was given by Margot Wallström, on 4 November 2014. The next was given by Donald Tusk on 4 July 2018.
